MAG Aircraft through the years When the Melbourne Aviation Group was established in September 1963, the original shareholders were struggling to find enough pilots to take up the shares, and as a consequence not enough cash was available to fund the purchase of a genuine four place aircraft. The embryonic Group was fortunately able to purchase an Auster J1B Aiglet, on a 'fly now - pay it off later' purchase deal. This aircraft, VH-KBI, is pictured below soon after arrival at Moorabbin Airport. Click image to show picture The Auster served the Group well for five years, but in 1968 it was time to move into a better cross- country machine. The choice of VH-KLJ, a Cessna C182A, gave a great stimulus to MAG's operations. Click image to show picture
By the time that MAG had successfully operated for ten years at Moorabbin Airfield, it owned three aircraft, supported by thirty shareholder pilots. The pride of the 'fleet' was the PA24 Piper Comanche VH-WGP, purchased in 1972. Click image to show picture
Having survived as a viable flying group for more than thirty-five years, MAG is now looking forward to the new century with great optimism, and with the hope that private pilots will continue to be able to enjoy the thrill of flying well into the next millennium. The present Company aircraft, VH-CXZ - a 1998 model C182S Skylane, and VH-NBE - a 1982 Piper PA24/181 Archer, both well equipped IFR aircraft, are ideally suited to carry the Group's operations into the 2000s.
